This is a time of the year where we celebrate the completion of another solar cycle, all while welcoming in new beginnings. This year we celebrate the completion of 11 Acatl (Reed) and welcome in the new energy of 12 Tekpatl (Flint). For those unfamiliar with the calendar systems utilized in Mesoamerica, the Mexica Calendar aka the Aztec Calendar System is one type of solar calendar that has been utilized by many groups in central America. Groups such as the Olmecs, Toltec, Mixtec, Zapotec and various Maya Tribes, among others, used solar calendars to hold various ceremonies and feasts throughout the year. The major difference among these calendars was the iconography and stories behind them. Each tribe had their own cultural aspects that defined their traditions. Despite cultural differences, many groups celebrated in unison, sending offerings and tributes to honor the elements, the directions and the earth. With this said, we want it to be known that this celebration goes beyond the Mexica. This is a time to honor all indigenous groups, as it is a time to honor the land, the air, the skies and the waters, which is all a representation of us. With a warm welcome and loving embrace, we would like to extend a special invitation to Las Vegas Danzantes and members of Indigenous groups. No matter where your roots are, we would love for you to come celebrate with us. Bring your family, your friends, and your loved ones to celebrate the completion of another cycle, while welcoming in a new year.
